Commodity Trading on Sales Desk
I am currently doing my first year as rotational graduate in FICC with a background in Quant Finance (MSc) from a domestic target school. I heard there might be an opportunity on the commodity desk (only been a sales desk until this date as the desk is only around 10 years, doing corporate hedging of all sorts of com, with back-to-back hedging i.e. taking very little to no risk.) The desk is doing well and growing rapidly. There are not a lot of opportunities like this here (Nordic region in Europe). I guess my question to you is if this could be a cool gig or not. Its uncertain to me how much risk a trader would be able to take on a sales desk (possible conflicts of interest)… I very much like macro and to have a systematic/quant approach to research (and trading if that’s what I end up doing) and I am wondering if you think this could make sense in such a role and if it sounds like a legit role or if I would only be covering the risk without having any market views myself. No one has taken this role before due to b-2-b hedging, although they have had some open positions in power etc due to lower liquidity. In the start up phase I would also be helping sales out with the more complex stuff as the «trading» part won’t be a full time job before everything is “set up”. Also, what kind of exit ops would this give me (considering my background and if I use a quant approach to this)…? I will of course demand more explanation to the role but need some inputs from you first. Thanks.
